Adolescent Discovered Deceased Following Untrue Accusations of Stealing Cremated Remains
A teenage boy was found dead just days following being falsely accused of stealing the cremated remains of a dead baby during a break-in, an inquest has learned.
Tragic Finding
Kai Lloyd's mother and father found his remains in his room at his Connah's Quay residence on November 19th, 2021.
Untrue Allegations Start
The investigation learned how his parent received a message on November 8th, 2021 via online platforms, from a individual asking if Kai was her offspring. The message added: "Tell him appreciation for breaking into my flat."
In a testimony presented to the court, the mother said the woman had been in the news, claiming her infant's remains had been stolen in a burglary - a claim which was untrue.
Law Enforcement Investigation
An official inquiry from police later determined the supposed burglary complainant had "provided false information" and "it now appears that said items was not taken in the beginning".
News coverage about the alleged taken remains generated social media responses, and although the teenager was not named in the messages, his parent said people "understood it was him".
The "social media content were really upsetting", she stated.
Mental Wellbeing Effect
She explained that her son had been identified with mild ADHD, and as part of that disorder, other individuals' opinions really mattered to him.
"This must have hurt him deeply," she said, "particularly when this was untrue".
The teenager was arrested at his residence, but nothing was discovered. He was taken to a police station and later freed pending further inquiry.
Authorities said they would be in contact, the hearing learned, but had failed to reached out to the family by the moment of his passing.
Isolation and Anxiety
His mother said her son "withdrew into himself" after the arrest and "would keep asking me whether I had received anything from the authorities", because his ADHD meant sometimes "certain periods could feel like much longer".
When she spoke to him about the alleged burglary, she said her son informed her he had entered the house because the woman who lived there had said he could utilize the bathroom whenever he wanted, but refuted taking anything.
Digital Harassment
In a combined testimony between her and her spouse, Mrs Lloyd said her child was being bullied digitally after the allegations.
The proceedings learned that one young adult urged the teenager to end his life.
She had no worries on the night before he died, explaining how she had listened to him "laughing and joking".
She portrayed him as a "compassionate, loving" young man, and said her "family is totally devastated".
He had been "obviously concealing his concerns", she stated, noting that he could not bear to have anyone "think bad of him".
School Reaction
The hearing heard from school staff at the local High School.
On 8 November, she "heard some boys talking that Kai had been arrested and that was the first I heard".
"He told me... he'd was innocent," she continued.
After the conversation, the educator said she called the family's family telephone and left a message saying she had spoken to the student about the accusations.
The court learned his family said they did not receive that message.
Formal Conclusion
Senior coroner informed the inquest he would await reports regarding what improvements had been made to dealing with individuals with the condition, before determining whether he should make a avoidance of future fatalities report.
Delivering a narrative conclusion, he stated: "Around November 8th, 2021, unsupported accusations were made against the teenager, a 14-year-old individual.
"Likely falsehoods were afterwards exaggerated and amplified through the medium of social media.
"During 11 November, he was interviewed by the authorities and after his questioning he was freed while investigations proceeded."
The official concluded: "Exists no evidence that the actions or failures of any organization led to or added to his death and although it was the result of a self-inflicted act it is impossible to determine his purpose."
