Donald Trump and Japanese Recently Appointed Prime Minister Share Compliments and Commit to Reinforce ‘Extraordinary’ Relationship

During a recent visit to Tokyo, former American leader Donald Trump together with the Japanese new Premier Takaichi exchanged warm compliments and vowed to enhance the already robust bilateral relations.

Key Points from the Meeting

Donald Trump commended Takaichi as a ‘exceptional’ figure and applauded her on becoming the nation's first female premier. In their talks at the capital's Akasaka Palace, the former president expressed confidence that Takaichi would prove to be one of the ‘great prime ministers’ of the country.

The prime minister, identified as a protégée of former Prime Minister Abe, applauded Trump's efforts to resolve international disputes and reportedly pledged to put forward Trump for the prestigious award.

Trade and Security Deals

The two governments announced a list of joint projects in areas such as power, AI, and rare earths. Japan-based firms are considering funding of up to $400 billion in the US.

Additionally, Tokyo had previously pledged $550bn in long-term US investments, loans, and guarantees as part of an agreement to obtain exemption from the former president's tariffs.

These actions are seen as potentially easing any future demands from Trump for Tokyo to boost its military expenditure. Takaichi addressed this by committing to accelerate proposals to raise defense spending to 2% of GDP.
