Israel's Cabinet Approves Deal for Captives' Freedom as American Forces to 'Monitor' Ceasefire

Israel's cabinet has formally ratified a detailed truce deal that includes the liberation of all outstanding detainees held by the militant group in Gaza, marking a crucial development toward ending the damaging two-year hostilities.

US Armed Forces Involvement in Overseeing the Ceasefire

High-ranking officials in the US capital have announced that a American armed forces unit of about 200 personnel will be dispatched to the territory to "oversee" the ceasefire after both Israel and Hamas acceded to the initial phase of the former President Trump administration's ceasefire plan.

The function will be to monitor, observe, ensure there are no infractions.

Swift Enactment Timeline

As per an Israel's spokesperson, the halt in fighting should begin right away following cabinet ratification. The Israel's defense forces was allocated 24 hours to withdraw its troops to an pre-determined position. Subsequently, the captives held in the Gaza Strip would be liberated within 72 hours, a cabinet official declared.

Significant Developments

  • Hamas' overseas-based Gaza Strip chief Khalil Al-Hayya claimed he had received guarantees from the US and other negotiating parties that the conflict was concluded.
  • The head of the US military's CENTCOM, Admiral Brad Cooper, would at first have 200 individuals on the ground, a high-ranking US authority stated.
  • Egyptian, Qatari, from Turkey and possibly Emirati armed forces officials would be incorporated in the unit, the American official noted. A another representative stated that "American forces are intended to go into the Gaza Strip".
  • Israeli strikes carried on in the time before the Israeli cabinet's vote. Blasts were witnessed on Thursday in northern the Gaza Strip, and a airstrike on a edifice in the Gaza capital claimed the lives of at least two people and left more than 40 trapped under wreckage, as per Palestinian civil defence.
  • A minimum of 11 dead Gazan residents and another 49 who were wounded arrived at health centers over the past 24 hours, the Gaza Strip's Hamas-administered medical department reported.
  • Israeli forces was targeting targets that constituted a threat to its forces as they relocate, said an Israeli military official who communicated on condition of confidentiality. The militant group blasted Israel over the attack, claiming that Netanyahu was attempting to "mix up the circumstances and confuse" initiatives by intermediaries to terminate the hostilities.
  • Twenty Israeli captives are still thought to be living in the Gaza Strip, while twenty-six are presumed dead, and the whereabouts of 2 is undetermined.
  • The Trump government wider 20-point ceasefire plan includes many unresolved questions, such as if and how Hamas will lay down arms. But both parties appeared nearer than they have been in months to terminating the hostilities, which was triggered by Hamas's 7 October 2023 offensive on Israeli territory, in which around 1,200 individuals were killed and 251 taken hostage, prompting an Israel's retaliation that has resulted in more than 67,000 Palestinians dead and nearly 170,000 wounded, according to the Gaza Strip's health authority.
  • The IDF said an Israeli soldier, a 26-year-old reserve soldier, was killed in a militant sniper assault in the Gaza capital on Thursday afternoon. This took place after Israel's and Hamas representatives finalized a agreement in Egypt to guarantee the liberation of the hostages, but the ceasefire aspect of the arrangement had not yet been implemented.
  • Israeli outlet Haaretz has released the identities of Gazan prisoners it considers could be liberated as part of the recent arrangement. 250 Gazan inmates who are serving lengthy prison terms are projected to be freed as part of the deal, out of around 290 currently held in Israel's prison. 22 minors will also be liberated.

International Feedback

There have been no plans for UK or European troops to be in Gaza after the ceasefire arrangement, the UK's foreign secretary the British official said. "This is not our arrangement, there's no plans to do that," she said on Friday morning.

The foreign secretary noted: "However there is an immediate initiative for the US to spearhead what is essentially like a monitoring system to make sure that this takes place on the ground, to supervise the system with captive release, and also guaranteeing that this initial stage is implemented, delivering the relief in place, but they have also made very unambiguous that they foresee the forces on the ground to be provided by neighbouring states, and that is something that we do expect to take place."

Cooper stated she expects the truce will be executed "right away". As per the official, there are international talks on an "global safety force" and the UK was carrying on to participate in other manners, including considering securing commercial investment into Gaza.

Civilian Reaction

Israeli citizens and Palestinian residents alike expressed joy after the halt in fighting deal was revealed, while there was happiness but also anxiety in the Gaza Strip amid worries the new deal could fail.
